Warsow

Warsow is a great game- Deathmatch is the only available type of gameplay- either online multi player or single player against bots. The cell shaded graphics are actually quite nice, once you get used to them. The player starts out each game with all the weapons- but more powerful ammo can be found during the game. The weapons are varied, balanced and interesting, while the level design is also very nice. Much of this game revolves around skill in movement.

Frets On Fire!

When I first encountered Guitar Hero on the Playstation 2, I was very embarrassed. I play guitar in a band called Fire It Up! (www.myspace.com/fireitup), yet non-musicians were destroying me at this game! Thankfully, I was able to download Frets On Fire, and develop my skills. The gameplay will be familiar to anyone who has played DDR.

Although the game itself only comes with three songs, it allows you to import Guitar Hero I and II songs onto your computer from the game.

Tremulous

My favorite game on Linux! This game is simply amazing...

The game play is very unique.. I'll leave the Ubuntu package describe itself:

"Tremulous
Aliens vs Humans, team based FPS game with elements of an RTS
Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...
Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the "Armoury". The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.
The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures."

There is no game I've played more obsessively on Linux then Tremulous

ActionCube

This is among my favorite games for Ubuntu...

An offshoot of the original Cube (to be featured in later posts), this game is mainly deathmatch oriented, both single player against bots, and multiplayer. The servers almost always have at least one good game going (often more), and gameplay styles include deathmatch, team deathmatch, one shot one kill, team one shot one kill, and capture the flag. The maps are interesting, and the graphics are very, very good, considering it's a free game. While playing, many of my friends have asked "Is that Counter-strike?"

Chromium

This game is a gem!

This is a great take on a time tested theme. I spent innumerable hours as a youth playing this type of top down spaceship game- they're tons of fun. This game has great graphics, a short learning curve, tons of levels and tons of bad guys.

"Chromium is a top down fast paced high action scrolling space shooter which uses the SDL libs. In this game you are the captain of the cargo
ship Chromium B.S.U., and responsible for delivering supplies to our troops on the front line. Your ship has a small fleet of robotic fighters which you control from the relative safety of the Chromium vessel."

It's available through Add/Remove Applications in Ubuntu, so you have no reason not to try it out.

This is a great French chess game. It's available through add/remove applications, so it's easy to install...

"pouetChess is a 3 dimensional and open source chess game for Linux. It has an embedded Artificial Intelligence so engines such as GNUChess are not even needed."

When it says embedded Artificial Intelligence, it is not joking. Granted, I am not much of a chess player, but even on "Newbie" difficulty pouetChess regularly makes me look like a dufus. It also makes me a better chess player, which is good. Be sure to check it out.

Hello!

Hello! Ever since I started using Ubuntu, I've had a lot of fun downloading and playing games. This is mostly because I don't have to pay for the vast majority of them (unlike with Windows), so I'm free to try out as many as I like. On this blog I'll post my favorites.
